Marion Köster

Dr. rer. nat.

Marion Köster is a marine microbial ecologist. She graduated in marine zoology, biological oceanography, and biochemistry with a Diploma in 1988 at the Christian-Albrechts-Universität in Kiel. She received a Ph.D. in marine microbiology in 1992. Her doctoral dissertation was part of the interdisciplinary research project “Benthic-pelagic coupling in the North Atlantic (SFB 313) and co-advised by Lutz-Arend Meyer-Reil and Gerhard Rheinheimer. As a Ph.D. student and postdoc she participated in numerous oceanographic cruises into the Norwegian Sea, southern Baltic Sea and the mid Atlantic shelf off the southeastern USA. Since 1993 she is a member of the Universität Greifswald. From 1993 to 2014 she served in the Department of “Microbial Ecology” at the Institut für Ökologie, which was founded on the Island of Hiddensee in 1992. During that period she co-advised several diploma and doctorate students of Meyer-Reil's. In October 2014 the microbial ecology group moved from the Isle to Greifswald where she continued to teach and advise undergraduates and graduates in Marine Microbial Ecology. She studies the role of bacteria and plankton in the marine carbon cycle. Her work is focused on the dynamics and microbial transformation of organic matter in coastal and offshore environments. Main topics of study and publications covered the activities of microbial communities to microplastics, harmful substances and global warming. Of major interest are marine microenvironments which include the fate of fecal pellets of diverse zooplankton genera, as well as planktonic aggregates, and phyto- and zooplankton detritus.

Tomislav Vološen

Research assistant

Tomislav received his Bachelor and Master engineering degrees at the Faculty of Food Technology and Biotechnology, University of Zagreb. At the end of his master studies Tomislav did an internship at the Technical University of Denmark in the group of Akos T. Kovács. In January 2020, Tomislav started his PhD in Microbiology at the Technical University of Dresden in the group of Thorsten Mascher. Since December 2023, he joined the group of André Scheffel and apply molecular genetic tools and microscopy to investigate protein localisation in alga Chrysotila carterae.
