My major research focus is microbiome dynamics in fen peatlands. I’m especially interested in microbiomes involved in methane and nitrogen cycles, and their links to greenhouse gas emissions in rewetted fens (WETSCAPES, ESF). I also focus on the methane-cycling microbiomes and their responses to thaw in permafrost soils (CryoVulcan, DFG), as well as environment biodiversity monitoring and comparison in different countries using eDNA/eRNA approaches (HIOH seed grant).

I am a soil ecologist focusing on mineralisation processes and nutrient dynamics in grassland soils, driven by interactions within the soil (micro)biota. My research specialises in cold environments, where frost and seasonality shape unique ecological processes. I aim to fully understand the dynamics of these systems, often delving into the intricate complexity of food web structures and relationships between organisms. This holistic approach allows me to unravel the interconnectedness that drives these ecosystems.
PI of my DFG fundined project (BO 5559/1-1) "Quantitative molecular assessment of the soil biota in high-latitude grasslands impacted by long-term warming"

Microbial communities influence life on our planet on small and large scales. In my PhD, I am investigating the anthropogenic influence on the microbial methane cycle in soils. For this, I combine classical microbiological methods, such as anaerobic cultivation, and molecular genetic methods, such as PCR.

Hi, I'm Verena and I'm currently a PhD student in the Biodiversity Exploratiories (external link) project.
I am using metatranscriptomics to investigate seasonal and depth dynamics as well as agricultural influences on the soil microbiome in grassland soils. My main focus is on bacterivorous (micro-)organisms, in particular myxobacteria.

I am an ecologist interested in soil microbiomes of novel restored ecosystems. Using my background in data science, I apply machine learning and bioinformatic tools to analyze microbial presence and activity. My primary research focus is microbial nutrient cycling in rewetted peatland soils, using a systems ecology and data-driven approach to link microbiome functions with landscape-scale dynamics.

As a microbial ecologist, I am interested in understanding the diversity and function of soil microbial communities involving viruses. My research focuses on the role of these microbes in nutrient cycling, particularly nitrogen and carbon. I have extensive experience in assembly and annotation of metagenomic sequences and in profiling metatranscriptomic data using tools such as MegaHit and DIAMOND.

I hold a B.Sc. in Zoology and an M.Sc. in Microbiology from Mahatma Gandhi University, Kerala, India. Currently, I am pursuing an M.Sc. in Biodiversity, Ecology, and Evolution at the University of Greifswald. My academic interests lie at the intersection of ecology and microbiology, and I am currently conducting my thesis research under the supervision of Dr. Mathilde Borg Dahl.

I hold a B.Sc. in Biology with a focus on Microbiology and am currently in the final semester of my M.Sc. in Infection Biology & Immunology.
As part of the eBio project (HIOH seed grant) under the supervision of Dr. Haitao Wang, my research focuses on characterizing Côte d'Ivoire soils across land-use gradients using nutrient profiling and eDNA analyses. My aim is to elucidate soil microbial ecology and investigate the connections between the soil microbiome and infectious diseases, supporting the One Health approach.
